The card is what someone keeps once the flowers are gone and the dessert has been eaten. Three things stop it sounding generic. The first is to name something specific: a joke only the two of you understand, the place you met, the habit that drives you mad and that you love anyway. The second is to keep it short: three or four lines get read twice, half a page gets skimmed. The third is to say why you are writing today, even if it seems obvious, because that anchors the gift to a moment.
If none of that comes, take one of the messages from the guide as it is and change a single word for the person's name. It works better than a perfect line copied off the internet.
In Medellín the peaks are clear. Birthdays and anniversaries all year round; Valentine's Day in February, Mother's Day in May, Amor y Amistad in September (Colombia's friendship holiday, with its office secret-friend exchange) and Christmas in December.
