Ours aren't that, and it's worth being clear about it: our eternal roses are handcrafted flowers made from satin ribbon. That difference is exactly what makes them last longer and need less care. Here's what they're made of, and the very little you have to do to keep them intact.
What are our eternal roses made of?
Every rose is built petal by petal. We cut the satin ribbon, heat-seal the edges so they won't fray, and fold each petal before layering it over the last, 12 to 15 petals per flower, in layers, working from the center outward to build volume. The stem is fixed in place, green sepals are added at the base, and often a rhinestone at the center. Then we arrange them into a bouquet and wrap it by hand in Korean paper with a bow.
It's entirely handwork, which is why no two bouquets are identical. It's also why we can make them in the exact color you want: we aren't limited to whatever roses the farm had that week.
Why they last longer than a preserved rose
A preserved rose is still plant matter: over time it dehydrates, humidity stains it and can rot it, and water ruins it outright. Its real lifespan is usually 2 to 4 years.
A satin rose has nothing in it that can dry out or decompose. It doesn't wilt, doesn't rot, isn't bothered by the humidity inside a home in Medellín, and has no expiry date. Give it the bare minimum and it looks the same as the day it arrived, indefinitely.
Care (there's barely any)
- Dust them: every few weeks, with a soft-bristle brush, a clean makeup brush or a duster. It's the only real maintenance they need.
- Away from heat and flame: this is the one that matters. Satin is a synthetic fiber and the glue holding the petals softens with heat. Keep them clear of stoves, candles, hot bulbs and harsh midday sun.
- Reshape petals with your fingers: if a petal got bent in transit, just open it back out by hand. Unlike a natural petal, satin doesn't break, it springs back.
What you DON'T have to do
- Never water them: there's no root and no living tissue. Water doesn't feed them and does nothing for them.
- Don't fear humidity: the preserved-flower rule doesn't apply here. You can keep them in a damp room with no problem; they won't rot.
- No dome or sealed box needed: they can sit out in the open on a shelf. The box is purely decorative.
- Don't put them away to protect them: they were made to be seen. That was the whole point.
How long can they last?
As long as you keep them away from fire and strong heat, there's no limit. They're a gift that keeps recalling that special moment season after season, unlike a natural bouquet that barely lasts a week.
